The Toxins You’re Probably Ignoring

1. It’s not perfectly clean

However — meeting the legal minimum does not mean the water is free of risks or contaminants. As the Environmental Working Group (EWG) cautions: “Legal does not necessarily equal safe.” EWG
2. Disinfection by-products & trihalomethanes
When water is treated with chlorine or chloramine, and organic matter is present, chemical by-products form. Some of these — like trihalomethanes (TTHMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) — are on EWG’s list of concern. For example:

The EWG found that in Austin the total trihalomethanes (TTHMs) measured ~31.4 ppb — that’s over 200 times the EWG “health guideline” of 0.15 ppb. EWG

Haloacetic acids (HAA9) were found at ~28.3 ppb — over 470 times the EWG health guideline of 0.06 ppb. EWG

3. Chromium-6 & other heavy metals
Though regulated metals get more attention, there are still unregulated or poorly regulated contaminants. For example:

4. “Forever chemicals” – PFAS
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), aka “forever chemicals”, are a major concern nationwide. These substances accumulate in the body, are linked to cancers, immune dysfunction, hormone disruption, and more.

So yes, this is a place where Austin is doing better than many systems — but “doing better” is not the same as “perfect”.
5. Why this matters for you

If you’re running a gym, coaching clients, or building a high-performance framework (which I know you are) — water quality matters.

Dehydration, impaired recovery, subtle inflammatory stresses: these aren’t always about diet alone. If the water you’re drinking is carrying by-products or low-grade contaminants, you’re gaining the hydration, losing part of the benefit.

For athletes, aging adults, and health-conscious clients, “good enough” water isn’t taking you forward — you want “optimized”.
6. What you can do

Drink bottled or filtered water that you trust. If you choose bottled, pick one with natural mineral content and no added sugars or extra processing.

Consider a high-quality home filtration system: look for ones certified to reduce TTHMs, HAAs, heavy metals, and PFAS.

7. The bottom line
Austin’s tap water is not awful, but it’s also not perfect. There are measurable concerns. For a health- and performance-focused person (like you and your clients), letting that slide is leaving gains on the table.
If you truly value peak performance, muscle recovery, clarity, longevity — you don’t want to settle for the minimum. You want the best you can reasonably get. That means upgrading your drink-systems, your gym’s emphasis on quality water, and your personal hydration strategy.
